What about the destruction of Damascus, Syria in Isaiah 17:1?

It is interesting that the Bible seems to be somewhat silent on the future of Syria. There are only 10 direct references to Syria in the prophetic books of the O.T. and none of them have any reference to the future. If there was a future prophecy for Syria, it seems that it would have been listed by Jeremiah. Even Jewish scholar and author, Dr. Arnold Fruchtenbaum, has no comments on Syria in his excellent study on “the Arab States in Prophecy.” It has become very popular for some to point to Isaiah 17 as a reference to the future destruction of Damascus. However, most Bible scholars correctly note that the context does not warrant such an interpretation. Isaiah 17 was fulfilled in 732 B.C. when the Assyria army destroyed Damascus. The same context speaks of God’s judgment on the northern state of the 10 tribes of Israel.

My guess is that Syria will become a part of Turkey. If that occurs, Syria could be included with Turkey in the future Ezekiel 38-39 war. The conjecture is based upon the fact that Syria is mostly Sunni Muslim and has been ruled by the minority Shi’ite Muslims in modern times. The rebels that are fighting against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad are all part of Sunni jihadist groups. All of this is only a guess. We will have to wait and see what develops, or maybe we will be raptured beforehand.
