Birth Pangs of the Tribulation

By Mike Wingfield

We are living in a most incredible moment in church history. Almost two millennia have passed since Jesus promised His disciples that He would one day personally return for His church. He said: “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am there ye may be also.” (John 14:2-3) While the disciples did not immediately understand the meaning of Jesus’ words, the book of Acts and the epistles of the New Testament tell us that they ultimately grasped what the Lord had told them. As a result, their faith was greatly impacted, transforming their ministries and how they lived their lives on a daily basis. An examination of the epistles of the apostles reveals that about 30 percent of the content of their exhortations and writings were riveted upon the expectation of the imminent return of their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

It is my personal opinion that the doctrine of the rapture of the church became the very heartbeat of the early church. It colored everything they did – the motives of their actions, the expressions of their worship and the urgency of their prayer life. It was the driving force behind their evangelism, discipleship, and church-planting efforts. When they met one another, the common greeting was “maranatha.” This is an Aramaic word that was coined by the early church as a greeting within the circle of believers. Some Biblical scholars believe this word means, “our Lord comes,” and served as a reminder of the final prayer of the Bible: “Even, so, come, Lord Jesus.” (Revelation 22:20) This seems to be supported by the use of the word by the Apostle Paul in the context of 1 Corinthians 16:22. Previous to the last chapter of this epistle, which contains final personal exhortations and greetings to the church at Corinth, the Holy Spirit directed Paul to give a lengthy revelation concerning the hope of the resurrection or rapture of the saints of God at the time of our Lord’s return. Therefore, when believers came into each other’s presence, it was their intention to greet one another in such a way that they were reminding one another of the coming of their Lord. In other words, it was always on their minds and was the daily longing of their lives!

According to the Scriptures, the Rapture of the church will be followed by a seven-year period of God’s wrathful judgment upon the nations. This time of great upheaval, known as the Tribulation Period, will be a prelude to the Lord’s return to establish a literal kingdom upon this earth for 1,000 years. (Revelation 20:1-6) This time of judgment is called “the day of the LORD” in the Old Testament Scriptures (Isaiah 13:6, 9). Jesus referred to this time as a time of “great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.” (Matthew 24:21)

This approaching Tribulation Period will not take place in a historical vacuum. It will be preceded by a series of very detailed events that will set the stage for the exact developments spelled out in hundreds of prophetic passages. The disciples of our Lord understood this, and it prompted them to ask Him: “What shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the [age]?” (Matthew 24:3) The response of Jesus is known as His Olivet Discourse and is recorded in three of the four gospels. (Matthew 24:1-25:46; Mark 13:1-37; Luke 21:5-36) A reading of Jesus’ answer to the disciples’ question gives a summary view of the trends that should be anticipated by believers. These trends will precede and therefore set in motion the events that will lead into the unique developments of the Tribulation Period. I am personally overwhelmed by sheer volume of truth that we have been given in the prophetic Scriptures that give the specific details of what will take place during the Tribulation Period.

Throughout the Scriptures, the prophets and apostles, and the Lord Himself, used a perfectly understood metaphor that sheds incredible light upon what is taking place in our world today. The trends that will set the stage for the end-time events to unfold are described as a woman going through the natural and painful process of giving birth to a baby. (Isaiah 13:8; 66:8-9; Micah 5:3; Matthew 24:8; Mark 13:8; 1 Thessalonians 5:3) In the process of natural child birth, two things take place. First, the birth of the child suddenly begins with painful muscle contractions that intensify until the child is born. At the same time, these muscle contractions follow a prescribed pattern. In this natural process, the painful muscle contractions are initially relatively mild and subside and reoccur with increasing intensity and frequency until the moment the baby is born. Similarly, we can expect the events that are shaping our world today to become more frequent and intensify as we approach the Tribulation Period. For those of us who are following world events, especially those occurring in the Middle East, it is apparent that we have entered into a very unusual era. Global trends, including politics, changes in the global economy, social and religious patterns and geological upheaval are ushering in movements that will reach their climax in the Tribulation Period. These trends are manifesting themselves with increasing intensity and frequency. Let us examine a few of them in this brief article.

At the center of all our attention are developments involving the divine process of the return of the Jewish people to their own land, and the world’s opposition to this work of God. The Lord promised the Jewish people: “For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries and will bring you into your own land.” (Ezekiel 36:24) The Scriptures predicted that when the Jews would return to their land in the last days they would face great opposition by the Arab/Islamic nations that surround Israel. (Ezekiel 36:1-7) Furthermore, the Bible tells us this regional opposition would eventually be supported by the global community. The Scriptures say the nations of the world will conspire to divide the Promised Land, and especially the city of Jerusalem, including the Temple Mount. (Joel 3:2: Zechariah 12-14; Revelation 11:1-2) Since the end of World War I, the world has witnessed a massive immigration of Jewish people back to their ancient homeland. And, as this occurs, there is growing opposition to the fulfillment of this divine prophecy. Islamic hatred of Israel has reached a fever pitch. We have witnessed the world’s attempt to appease the Muslim nations by joining the opposition against the Jewish presence in the land God promised them forever. (Genesis 13:15) There have been repeated attempts to force Israel to concede the land promised to her, which she has acquired while defending herself from the military aggression of her enemy neighboring nations. In essence, Israel is being forced to concede land to enemies that are sworn to her destruction.

It is very apparent that this process is intensifying and has entered a final stage. It is evident that there is a concerted effort on the part of the Obama administration, supported by the Europeans and the rest of the world, to force Israel into a covenant with the Palestinians. According to Aaron Klein, a Jewish journalist with World Net Daily living in Jerusalem, the Obama administration has made it one of its main objectives to reach an agreement that will create a Palestinian State on the West Bank. According to Klein, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is promoting a call for a final agreement that will create a Palestinian state. This plan promotes the following major points of agreement: (1) The Palestinian Authority and Jordan will

“receive sovereignty over the Temple Mount while Israel will retain the land below the Western Wall.” (2) Within the old city of Jerusalem, the Jewish areas will remain under Israeli control, while the Arab sections will remain under Palestinian control. (2) An international force will join an unarmed Palestinian police force to maintain security control of the Jordan Valley. Israel will “retain security posts in some strategic areas of the Jordan Valley.”

(3) Israel will be asked to surrender about 90 percent of its Jewish communities that are currently located in the West Bank (a total Jewish population of 340,000). Israel will surrender some Israeli controlled areas in the Negev to the Palestinians in exchange for some of the larger Jewish settlements on the West Bank that will be retained by Israel. (E-mail from Aaron Klein, Trouble in the Holy Land, “Secret Obama Plan Forfeits Temple Mount to Palestinians,” July 21, 2013)

While the world forces the Israelis to surrender land to the Palestinians, it ignores what is happening on the West Bank and in Gaza. The Palestinian people are currently divided with two governments, Fatah on the West Bank and Hamas in Gaza. In reality, both governments are sworn to the destruction of the entire state of Israel, from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan Valley. The Palestinian leader on the West Bank, Mahmoud Abbas, continues to work behind the scenes to promote incitement against all Jews in Israel. Maps in their political offices and school books do not recognize the state of Israel. State controlled media and the Islamic leadership in the mosques continually promote hatred of the Jews and the destruction of Israel. Recently, the Palestinian Authority took $148 million from U.S. aid and gave it as “grants” to convicted Palestinian terrorists who have Israeli blood on their hands. (www.foxnews.com/world/2013/09/07)

Abbas recently visited Egypt, where he provided his vision of an Israeli-Palestinian peace to Egyptian journalists. He said: “In the final resolution, we would not see the presence of a single Israeli – civilian or soldier – on our lands.” (The International Jerusalem Post, “Palestine without Jews,” August 2-8, 2013, p. 7) Is this the language or vision of a man who really is seeking peace with Israel? The real issue, as Israelis have come to realize, is that the Arab Muslims fail to recognize the right of Jews to live in any part of the land formerly called Palestine. It is all an act of deception to take control of the land of Israel piece by piece, until the Muslims have it all and the Jews are all gone.

All of this is rapidly setting the stage for “the covenant of death” that the prophet Isaiah declared the rulers in Jerusalem would sign with those who are filled with lies and are promoting the destruction of Israel. (See Isaiah 28:1422) This is the same covenant that is mentioned in Daniel 9:27 that will officially begin the Tribulation Period. [For more insight, order Mike’s message: #024-“The Tribulation Covenant.”]

The Tribulation Period will open with a massive global Islamic Jihad against all non-Muslims and especially professing believers in Jesus Christ. (Revelation 6:1-11; 7:917) While all true believers in Jesus Christ will be raptured before the Tribulation begins, there will be millions of professing Christians who are not really born-again that will be left behind.

In my opinion, the four horses of Revelation 6 represent a powerful military conquest and its devastating effects at the beginning of the Tribulation. This text predicts that Islam will reach its global goal with the restoration of a Caliphate (Islamic global dictator who will rule the world by the law of the Koran) during the opening months of the Tribulation. As a result, there will be a massive Islamic slaughter of one-fourth of the world’s population. [For more on this interpretation and application see Mike’s message #165: “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.”)

In recent years, in conjunction with the spread of radical Islam, Christians are being murdered and persecuted, causing millions of them to flee from their homes as a means of survival. Hudson Institute scholars, Paul Marshall, Lela Gilbert and Nina Shea, who have documented their findings in their new book, Persecuted, The Global Assault on Christians, state that Christians are the most persecuted religious group in the world. They document that Christians are suffering in 133 nations. (The Jerusalem Post Christian Edition, “Covering for Islamic Cruelty,” July 2013, p. 28)

Raymond Ibrahim, a Coptic Orthodox Christian and scholar with the Middle East Forum, states: “Wherever and whenever Muslims are in power or getting more power, churches are outlawed, burned and bombed, while Bibles and crucifixes are confiscated and destroyed. Freedom of speech – to speak positively of Christianity or critically of Islam – is denied, often on pain of death. In many places, Christian women and children are routinely abducted, raped, and forced to convert to Islam.” (The Jerusalem Post Christian Edition, “Covering for Islamic Cruelty,” July 2013, p. 27) In his new book, Crucified Again: Exposing Islam’s New War on Christians, Ibrahim “notes that in the early part of the 20th century, 20 percent of the Middle East was Christian. That number now stands at around 5 percent and is dwindling fast.” (The Jerusalem Post Christian Edition, “Covering for Islamic Cruelty,” July 2013, p. 27)

In light of this, the slaughter of professing Christians across the Middle East in the last few months is very significant. One of the main Islamic groups behind this bloodshed is the Islamic Brotherhood. It is this same group, founded in Egypt in 1928, that has as its main goal the establishment of the Caliphate once again. In Egypt alone, hundreds of Christians have been killed and over 60 churches burned to the ground in recent weeks. One of these churches was built in the 4th century.

Michael Snyder recently commented: “Over the past couple of days, we have witnessed some absolutely horrific examples of Islamic terror groups specifically targeting Christians and those from other non-Muslim religions. Sadly, this is not a new phenomenon. The recent events in Pakistan, Kenya and Egypt may have taken this persecution to a new level, but this is just the continuation of a trend that has been building for years. Unfortunately, Barak Obama does not seem too concerned about Islamic terrorism. In fact, he specifically directed that ‘all references to Islam’ be removed from terrorism training materials that the federal government uses.” (www.theendoftheamericandream.com[link no longer recommended], September 23, 2013)

It is also most alarming to note the Vatican’s response to all of this. Pope Francis, on the day after his installation as the new pope, “urged the Catholic Church to ‘intensify’ its dialogue with Islam and Muslim leaders to influence ‘all people in such a way that everyone can see in the other not an enemy … but a brother or sister.’” (The Jerusalem Post Christian Edition, “The Vatican and Islam,” July 2013, p. 44) This compromising and ecumenical position by the Vatican demonstrates that they will not oppose the march of Islam to become the global religion of the Tribulation Period.

It is very frightening to observe that the United States is focused upon the condemnation of Israel as the aggressor against the Palestinians, while ignoring the slaughter of thousands of Christians all over the Middle East. Furthermore, it seems that the world is ready to come to the aid of the rebels in Syria that are killing Syrian Christians and are promoting a global Islamic Caliphate. Israel Today reports that the Al-Qaeda rebels have vowed to slaughter Christians in Syria after the U.S. helps them liberate Syria from the Assad regime. (www.israeltoday.co.il, “Al-Qaeda Vows to Slaughter Christians after

U.S. Liberates Syria,’ September 12, 2013) This is not only shocking, but very revealing concerning the direction our world is moving. This trend is gaining momentum and is a definite birth pang of the Tribulation Period. Speaking of the Tribulation Period, Jesus warned His Jewish apostles: “ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.” (Matthew 24:9) Jesus also told His Jewish disciples: “The time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.” (John 16:2)

While all of these significant developments are escalating and intensifying, the entire world is rapidly moving toward an unprecedented global economic meltdown. Most Americans think that the economic downturn that took place in 2008 is history and that global markets are recovering and moving once again toward a health global economy. An examination of the real economic facts reveals that we are tediously standing on an economic cliff and are ready to plunge into a chasm of economic oblivion that the modern world has never experienced. This is significant because the Tribulation Period will begin with global hyperinflation that will force the average person to spend an entire day’s wage to buy one quart of wheat – the equivalent of two loaves of bread. (Revelation 6:5-6) Most Americans are not aware that this is already a reality for about one-half of the world’s population.

Looking at the Asian economy, both Japan and China are facing economic uncertainties. Japan’s economy is on the verge of an economic collapse. The total amount of the Japanese government’s debt is more than 211 percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This debt is so large that the Japanese government is spending 51.5 percent of its tax revenue just to pay the interest on its debt. Private domestic debt in China has increased from $9 trillion in 2008 to $23 trillion today. (www.thethruthwins.com [no longer a valid link], September 17, 2013)

The European debt is still rapidly rising. Greece, Italy, Portugal, Ireland, Spain, and Netherlands are all getting worse, not better. The collective Euro area’s debt ratio compared to its GDP has increased from 88.2 percent a year ago to 92.2 percent today. (www.thethruthwins.com [no longer a valid link], September 17, 2013)

However, the real threat of an economic meltdown is still present because of what is taking place in America. The U.S. debt is now approaching $17 trillion. The U.S. government debt per capita is more than that of Greece, Portugal, Ireland or Spain! In essence, every American citizen’s portion of their government’s debt is currently over $188,000. In addition to this, Americans are witnessing the approaching collapse of city and state governments. Most of these governments are in trouble because they can no longer fund pension programs that have been promised to retired employees. The Federal government is facing the same kind of scenario with Social Security. “It is being projected that the number of Americans on Social Security will rise from 57 million today to more than 100 million in 25 years.” (www.thethruthwins.com [no longer a valid link], September 17, 2013)

In reality, the American economy is more vulnerable to collapse today than it was in 2008. This is primarily due to trends within the U.S. banking system. Since 2008 there has been an alarming trend of six big banks swallowing up hundreds of smaller banks. Michael Snyder writes: “The too big to fail banks are now much, much larger than they were the last time they caused so much trouble. The six largest banks in the United States have gotten 37 percent larger over the past five years. Meanwhile, 1,400 smaller banks have disappeared from the banking industry during that time. What this means is that the health of JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley is more critical to the U.S. economy than ever before. If they were ‘too big to fail’ back in 2008, then now they must be ‘too colossal to collapse.’ Without these banks, we do not have an economy. The six largest banks control 67 percent of all U.S. banking assets, and Bank of America accounted for about a third of all business loans by itself last year. Our entire economy is based on credit, and these giant banks are at the very core of our system of credit. If these banks were to collapse, a brutal economic depression would be guaranteed. Unfortunately … these banks did not learn anything from 2008 and are being exceedingly reckless. They are counting on the rest of us bailing them out if something goes wrong, but that might not happen next time around.” (www.theeconomiccollapseblog.com, September 20, 2013)

The developments mentioned in this article are only a very small part of the overall picture of the intensifying conditions that are setting the stage for the beginning of the Tribulation Period. In light of what is happening and what the Bible projects into the future, our world is staring into the face of a horrific time. We are about to embark on an era of deception, wickedness, wars, revolutions and social upheaval on a level never experienced in the annals of human history. This will be magnified by the fact that there is a record 7 billion people living on this planet at this hour.

I will be the first one to admit that the mental consideration of all of this is very difficult to grasp. There is a part of all of us that wants to live in denial that we are near the end of this age and that our world is facing, perhaps in just a very short period of time, the horrors of the Tribulation Period.

We need to recall the message of the Apostle Paul in 1 Thessalonians 5:1-3: “But of the times and season, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord [the Tribulation Period] so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they [the world] shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.” In this text, the Spirit of God reminds all of us that when the final time comes, people will be oblivious to the world events that will bring sudden destruction upon their world, from which they will not escape. In the following verses of this text, Paul exhorts us to remind our fellow believers in Christ that we are not in spiritual darkness because of our Biblical world view. Our Lord exhorted His disciples to be watching world events so that they would know that their redemption is very near. (Luke 21:28)

In 1 Thessalonians 5:3-11, the Spirit of God directed the Apostle Paul to remind the church that when they see these things coming to pass that it is not a time to be spiritual lazy or asleep. It is a time to be serious about letting our light shine for the Lord Jesus. Furthermore, this should not create a spirit of doom and gloom for the believer. This is intended to “comfort” the church. God commands us to live in a spirit of joy as we come along side of our fellow believers and exhort them to look past all of the pain of the present age. We should remind them of the woman who is giving birth to a baby. The birth pangs will be painful. However, the precious hope that at the end of this pain she is going to have a baby should help her to endure the pain of childbearing. Likewise, what we are and will experience until Jesus comes will be painful. However, let us not forget that at some point in time our redemption will be complete and we will be suddenly and supernaturally ushered into the presence of our Lord Jesus in the twinkling of an eye. (1 Corinthians 15:51-52)

“It will be worth it all when we see Jesus. Life’s trials will seem so small when we see Christ. One glimpse of His dear face, all sorrow will erase. So, bravely run the race, till we see Christ.”

Get ready to fly! We are going home!

The Gog and Magog Coalitions

According to Ezekiel 38-39, in the last days Russia will lead a coalition of Islamic nations in an attempted invasion of Israel. This coalition will include: Magog [Russia], Persia [Iran], Cush [the area of Ethiopia and Sudan], Put [Libya], and Gomer with the house of Togarmah [Turkey]. It is usually overlooked that there is another coalition of nations mentioned in Ezekiel 38:13 which will express concern that Russia and her Islamic allies are invading Israel. This verse mentions: “Sheba [Northern Arabia], and Dedan [Southern Arabia along the Persian Gulf], and the merchants of Tarshish [perhaps a reference to the European nations, especially Great Britain], with all the young lions…” [Some think this could refer to the former nations that were once a part of the of British Empire that surrounded the globe – the U.S., Australia, New Zealand and other nations in the free-world.] If our identification of the nations in both of these coalitions is correct, it is very significant to note what is happening in the Middle East at this time. It is apparent that the rearrangement of the nations that is taking place in what is called “the Arab Spring” is shaping these two coalitions.

Israelis are watching these developments in their Islamic neighborhood and are very concerned about the new alliances that are forming. “The political Middle East is being arranged around the religious fault-line that has run historically between Sunnis and Shi’ties. This is what is happening in Iraq, where Sunnis feel they are being taken over, this is what is happening in Bahrain, where the Shi’ites are on the defensive, and this is what is happening in Syria, where the Alawites [the political party of Assad] are allied with Lebanon’s and Iran’s Arab and Persian Shi’ites.

“Turkey is essentially aligning with Russia.” (The Jerusalem Post Christian Edition, August 2013, p. 200) In addition to this, “Iran is building a Red Sea naval base at Port Sudan facing the coast of Saudi Arabia. … a large-scale munitions production and distribution center for supplying Iran’s Middle East allies is going up in Sudan.” (www.debka.com, DEBKA file, September 24, 2013) So, the coalition that will invade Israel is already beginning to form.

What has happened in recent weeks concerning the global division over what to do about Syria reveals something about the other coalition that will be questioning the invading Shi’ite – Russian forces in the Gog and Magog invasion of Israel. Notice that the United States, some European countries, and the Sunni Islamic states of the Persian Gulf – the same group mentioned in Ezekiel 38:13 appealed to the United Nations concerning a military strike against Assad in Syria because of his use of chemical weapons upon his own people. It is apparent that Obama and his allies backed down from their threat of a strike against Syria because of the strength of those who opposed their plans – Russia, Iran and their Shi’ite friends.

China also opposed the attack upon Syria because of her friendship and economic cooperation with Iran. One cannot tell, but, perhaps the U.S. also decided to back away from a strike against Syria because China owns about $1.275 trillion of our national debt and Russia about $138 billion (collectively, about one-fourth of our national debt owned by foreigners). Should China and Russia decide to start dumping our debt because of a military strike against Syria, it could begin a trend that would bring about a collapse of our economy. Therefore, the weakness of the United States and her allies, in the Middle East is beginning to come into focus. This is of great concern to our allies in the Middle East. Our great friend and long-time ally, Israel is especially concerned because they know this makes them very vulnerable in their dangerous neighborhood.

More than ever before, we need to pray for the peace of Jerusalem, and stand still and see the salvation of Israel. The God of Israel will defend His people in His land for His glory. The fireworks are about to begin and somewhere in the midst of all of this we will fly home to be with our Lord!

Get ready for the shout that will take us out!

2013 September – Violence and the End of a Culture

Violence and the End of a Culture

By Mike Wingfield

Violence is permeating our world at every level of society. The Middle East is spiraling out of control with violence as radical Islam flexes its muscle in an attempt to terrorize the world into submission. Islam’s ultimate goal is to dominate the world and subject it to Allah. Violent attacks against individuals across Europe and around the world are viewed by Muslims as acts of obedience to the Koran’s commands to wage holy war against the infidels. Moderate Muslims are also being targeted who refuse to submit to the ritualistic law of the Koran in their daily lives. At the same time, all cultures are experiencing an escalating violence in their societies. Here in the U.S., our educational institutions have become places of violence. Bullying has become an all too familiar occurrence. Our daily news media are filled with graphic stories involving of murder and violence. We talk about road rage, violence acts against women, children, and infants in the womb. In addition, violence associated with wars has become all-too common for millions living in our world. All the while, our entertainment industries thrive on selling violence. Sports, music, video games, television programming, and movies are filling the minds of consumers with an increasing diet of graphic violence.

Before we turn to the Bible to understand what all of this means, let us listen to the concerns of some in the secular world who are very alarmed by the increase of violence in our culture. The Media Education Foundation [www.mediaed.org] reports the following facts about media violence: “Research indicates that media violence has not just increased in quantity; it has also become more graphic, sexual, and sadistic. By the time the average child is eighteen years old, they will have witnessed 200,000 acts of violence and 16,000 murders. Media violence is especially damaging to young children (under 8) because they cannot easily tell the difference between real life and fantasy. Most of the top-selling video games (89%) contain violent content, almost half of which was of a serious nature. The level of violence during Saturday morning cartoons is higher than the level of violence during prime time. There are 3-5 violent acts per hour on prime time, versus 20-25 acts per hour on Saturday morning. Nearly 75 percent of violent scenes on television feature no immediate punishment for or condemnation of violence.” (www.mediaed.org)

According to the Bible, when violence permeates a culture it ultimately leads to self-destruction and the judgment of God. For example, a permeation of violence in the culture during Noah’s day led to divine judgment of the entire world. In Genesis 6, the Lord has given us a written indictment on Noah’s generation. The Bible clearly states that the moral climate during Noah’s time provoked God’s holy wrath in the form of a global flood. That society had become morally “corrupt.” (Genesis 6:11-13) A part of that moral corruption was violence. Notice that the Lord repeatedly told Noah: “the earth is filled with violence.” (Genesis 6:11, 13) This simply means that the people of Noah’s age were in love with sensuality and violence. Their minds were continually filled with pornographic and violent images. Note Genesis 6:5: “And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” They enjoyed it: Immorality and violence no longer produced any shame or guilt in their consciences. They explored it: Searching for more bizarre and sadistic forms of wickedness. They embraced it: Violence became normal, bringing a change in their lifestyle. They proudly exported it: Spreading their sin to engage others in their shame.

Let us examine five Biblical considerations about violence:

1. The Biblical Definition of Violence

After doing research on this subject, I am convinced that very few Christian leaders or believers understand the Biblical view of violence. It is most interesting to observe that the Hebrew word that is translated “violence” in Genesis 6 is “hamas.” Please note that this is the name of the Islamic terrorist group in the Gaza Strip that has been chosen by the Palestinian population to govern them. This Islamic terrorist group wears the badge of Islamic jihad with great pride. They have openly adopted the name VIOLENCE. Their charter openly calls for the complete annihilation of the Jewish population in Israel from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River – all of the land of Israel! Everyone in the Middle East knows that Hamas and another radical Islamic element, the Muslim Brotherhood are the same group. They have different names, but they are two different divisions of the same organization. It is their stated purpose to fill the earth with violence to accomplish their agenda of global control for the glory of their God – Allah.

The Hebrew word, “hamas”, means: to bring great harm to people both physically and mentally… to act in a way that is destructive, hateful, lawless, disrespectful, wicked, wild, ruthless, or brutal. Often, these actions are accompanied by loud expressions of hate. Proverbs 10:6 states: “violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.” According to the Bible, violence is an action, gesture, or expression due to the lack of moral restraint. In Amos 3:9-10, the Lord informed Israel that the governments of Ashdod (the Gaza Strip today), Egypt, and “the mountains of Samaria” (the “West Bank” today) “know not to do right” while they “store up violence and robbery in their palaces.” Clearly, the Lord stated that these former and present enemies of Israel are filled with violence against His people because they lack moral restraint.

Violence is an expression of defiance and disrespect for the very basic code of behavior that the Spirit of God wishes to instill in the conscience of mankind. Violence, and its ultimate expression – murder, are the exact opposites of the character and nature of God. (Read 1 John 2:11-16) The Biblical law of God, and specifically the 10 Commandments, are aimed at a reverence for God and respect for human beings who have been created in the image of God. The law of God supports and promotes the very foundation of life. Therefore, violence is the result of a total departure from this law and its author – God! In essence, the culture that espouses violence is in a mode of self-destruction! The testimony of Scripture indicates that murderers and those who commit acts of violence against human beings are acting like Satan, not God! In John 8:44, Jesus called Satan “a murderer from the beginning.” In Revelation 9:11, Satan is called “Abaddon” (Hebrew for “destroyer”), and “Apollyon” (Greek for “destroyer”).

2. The Cultural Impact of Violence

From the very beginning, God instructed Israel that violence and murder defile a culture. Read Numbers 35:29-34. In response to willful murder, God demanded capital punishment. In verse 31 God said: “Moreover ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death.”

When expressions of violence are allowed to permeate a culture, they will create a society that is void of a godly conscience, leading to increasing levels of wickedness, lawlessness, sensuality, and brutality. When a society travels down the path of depravity and rebellion from God, they will suppress “the truth in unrighteousness.” (Romans 1:18) This will lead to “their foolish [conscience being] darkened.” (Romans 1:21) Eventually, they are “filled with …. murder” and many other forms of violence and wickedness. (Romans 1:29 -32)

3. The Divine Judgment due to the Permeation of Violence in a Culture

A study of the Bible and human history will demonstrate that cultures filled with violence come to an end. That is because violence brings a lack of fear or respect for God. This is visually manifested in their lack of respect for man, who has been created in the image of God. The Bible consistently teaches that our love and respect for God is clearly illustrated by how we treat others. (Exodus 20:117; Matthew 22:34-40; 1 John 4:20-21) While commenting on Genesis 6:11, Matthew Henry, a godly leader and author of a well-known Bible commentary a few generations ago, wrote: “Take away conscience and the fear of God, and men become beasts and devils to one another, like fishes of the sea, where the greater devour the less. Sin fills the earth with violence, and so turns the world into a wilderness, into a cock-pit.”

When a culture reaches this spiritual point of no return, the Spirit of God can no longer “strive with man.” (Genesis 6:3) As a result, God’s holiness demands that He destroy that culture in divine judgment. It has happened several times in human history and it will happen once again. The global violence today, as in the days of Noah, is demanding the divine judgment of God. That global judgment will take place on a global scale during the seven-year tribulation period.

4. The Violence at the End of this Age

After the restraining influence on sin through the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the church has been removed at the Rapture, the world will erupt into a cycle of violence and murder that is unprecedented in the history of man. This violence will be aimed at Israel, the Jewish people (Daniel 12:1; Revelation 12:6, 13-17) and believers in Jesus Christ. (Daniel 7:25; Revelation 6:9-11; 13:7; 17:6; 20:4) Leading the violence will be the religion of Islam (pictured as the harlot in Revelation 17-18), and the Islamic Antichrist and his false prophet. (Revelation 13:15) Early in the Tribulation Period, the Antichrist will engage in a global jihad “to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another.” (Revelation 6:4) The opening months of the Tribulation will feature a bloody war of jihad that will result in the death of one-fourth of the world’s population. (Revelation 6:8)

At this very hour, violence and death are being waged by Muslims against the Christian populations in Syria, Egypt and throughout the Middle East. It is a powerful witness to what is coming in the immediate future. If the West does not act against these radical Islamic elements to stop the killing of innocent Christians, this war will spread to Europe and the United States. It is only a matter of time before this happens. The free world was standing in a similar place only 73 years ago when Hitler was brutally murdering Jews and taking control of the countries of Europe. Humanly speaking, if the free world does not respond, the forces of evil will multiply and violence will fill the earth. Only the Lord knows what course the world will take in the next few months and years. With America and Europe being swept into socialism, it appears that they will not rise to the occasion. They fail to heed the lessons from World War II only two generations ago.

My father and father-in-law fought in World War II. am very thankful for the sacrifice they and millions of others made to protect our freedom from Nazi and Japanese tyranny. They willingly made these sacrifices because our American leadership recognized the need to deal with critical threats to our faith and freedom. However, today, many in our leadership not only lack the resolve to do something about this threat, but are supporting the Muslim Brotherhood, the perpetrator of the growing violence in the Middle East and around the world. Can you image what would have happened during World War II if the United States had sided with the Nazis? Yet, that is what is occurring at this very hour. America is standing in the wrong place in the war against evil. Most tragically, we are not standing on moral high ground with God. America has morally collapsed. It is shocking to think of what has happened to our blessed country in the last 70 years.

May God have mercy on America!

5. Biblical Admonitions Concerning Violence

The message of the Bible is very clear – God hates violence. When violence flows out of the human heart to harm or kill human beings for selfish gain or hatred, it arouses the anger of God. It must be understood that there is a righteous anger or indignation that flows out of the very holy character of God. Finally, after being patient for thousands of years with the violence of the wicked, Jesus will systematically deliver His holy wrath against the sinful masses through massive global judgments for seven years. At the end of the Tribulation Period, Jesus will visibly and bodily return to this earth and speak a word of holy judgment and death against the armies of the world gathered against Him and Israel at Armageddon. Revelation 19:15 says He will “smite the nations… and tread the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.” At the end of this battle, the Lord will invite the birds of prey to feast on the corpses of the thousands who will have fallen on the mountains of Israel. (Revelation 19:1718)

Sometimes, war and violence must be waged against the wicked who are murdering others. God demands this of human governments! (Read Genesis 9:6; Numbers 35:29-34; Romans 13:1-4) For example, God used the nation of Israel to carry out His righteous judgment against the wicked and murderers of Canaan. (Deuteronomy 18:9-14) The Lord will use the nation of Israel in the last days to destroy the nations that are killing His people. (Jeremiah 51:19-23)

Psalm 11:5 states that the Lord hates those who “love violence.” During the millennium, the Lord will directly exercise His divine sovereignty over the nations of the world. He will not permit any violence or war! Isaiah 2:4 declares: “And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.” The war-torn Middle East, which has been ravaged with violence since the days of Abraham, will finally become a place of peace. Those who will be saved out of the former Arab/Islamic nations in the Middle East and survive the Tribulation will be spiritually transformed. They will no longer hate Israel, but will confess that the Jewish people are the people of God, and will bless those they have hated for generations. (Isaiah 60:6-19) Please notice Isaiah 60:14: “The sons also of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee; and all they that despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee , The city of the LORD, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel” Because of this heart change among the Arab nations, the Lord has joyfully declared to Israel: “Violence shall no more be heard in thy land.” (Isaiah 60:18) Finally, true peace will come upon the cities of Israel. The great prophet of God, Isaiah, wrote about this: “And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.” (Isaiah 35:10)

As individual children of God we should be known as peace makers, not troublemakers. Jesus declared: “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” (Matthew 5:9) The Scriptures exhort the individual believer: “[Return] to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” (Romans 12:17-19)

As believers, we must protect our consciences by refraining from viewing or listening to violent expressions of any kind. We must not permit violence to enter our homes or minds with any level of acceptance or pleasure! We must guard our ears and eyes from any kind of violence that can desensitize our conscience. (Proverbs 4:23-27) We must fill our minds with Scripture and God’s way of peace. The Bible demands: “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:” (Hebrews 12:14) We are exhorted to let grace and peace be multiplied in our hearts. When the Apostle Peter began his final epistle, he began with the exhortation: “Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord.” (2 Peter 1:2) When we walk in the power of the Holy Spirit, we will be persons of peace. Read Galatians 5:22-23.

As violence escalates around the world and especially in the Middle East, we need to remember that Jesus taught that evil thoughts and murder come out of the human heart. (Matthew 15:19) The only real answer to the violence in our world is in the person of Jesus Christ – the Prince of Peace. After He judges the nations with His holy wrath, He will establish His kingdom of peace. That peace will be maintained by the firm hand of our Lord as He rules the nations “with a rod of iron.” (Revelation 12:5) Also, the fear of the Lord will permeate the nations because “the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.” (Habakkuk 2:14) That is why He has instructed us to pray: “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10) Come, Lord Jesus. We need you more than ever before!

Descending into Darkness

According to the prophetic Word of God, the world will descend into one of the darkest periods of human history before King Jesus returns to establish His kingdom. Contrasting the spiritual light that will dawn upon this earth at the beginning of our Lord’s kingdom with the spiritual darkness that will precede it, the prophet Isaiah wrote: “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. For, behold the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee [Israel], and his glory shall be seen upon thee.” (Isaiah 60:1-2)

From a human perspective it appears that mankind is falling into the dark, deep pit of depravity that will engulf the wicked during the Tribulation Period. The world is in a moral, spiritual, and economic free-fall. The nations are embracing Islam, worshipping Allah. At the same time, Christians are being killed and persecuted, and many hate the name of “Jesus.” Violence is permeating the global culture, and the threat of war in the Middle East seems to increase with each passing day.

It is not an accident that the Middle East is going through a major shift in the political/religious power-structure that controls the region. Israel finds itself surrounded by nations where national sovereignties are breaking down and radical elements of global Islamic jihad are taking control.

Egypt, the largest Arab/Islamic country in the Middle East, is descending into a very dangerous cycle of violence as moderate Muslims attempt to regain control of their country from the radical elements who were in control. The radicals have seized the moment to attack the Christian community, claiming that they were responsible for the overthrow of Mohamed Morsi’s presidency, a prominent leader of the Muslim Brotherhood. Christians are being brutally attacked and killed. More than 60 churches have been destroyed by those who are supporters of the radical Muslim movement in Egypt. The outcome of this struggle for power in Egypt will be very critical to the future of the entire Middle East.

The two-year old war in Syria has claimed over 100,000 lives, many of whom were Christians killed by the radical Islamic rebels that are attempting to take control of Syria. The world has learned that the Syrian government used chemical weapons to kill thousands of its own people. Consequently, the world is about to topple the Assad regime to allow the rebels to take control of Syria. Several radical factions are fighting on the side of the rebel forces. The two major factions are the Muslim Brotherhood and Al Qaeda. So, the West, including the U.S., is arming Al Qaeda in the attempt to overthrow Assad. Isn’t it odd that the very same Islamic group we have attempted to destroy for several years in Afghanistan, we are now supporting in Syria?

It should be alarming for people when they realize that the Western powers are involved in turning the Middle East over to the very radical Islamic groups that have declared jihad against the West. This is very dangerous for Israel, the U.S., and the entire free world. There appears to be only two logical explanations for the West’s support of these radical jihadist groups. These governments must be operating in total moral and intellectual darkness, having been deceived by these groups. Or, they are joining hands with evil to enhance and promote their own agendas. It is my opinion that it is the later of these two explanations.

It is possible that if the Lord does not come first, we will witness the beginning of a New World Order that will feature a political marriage between socialism and Islam. An examination of the current working system within the United Nations will reveal that this is already becoming a reality. The political marriage will be very bad for believers in Jesus Christ and all Jews, and especially the nation of Israel.

According to several sources, Israel realizes that it is only a matter of time before these Islamic forces will join together to attack the Jewish state. Israeli Lt.-Col. Jackie Ben-Yakar recently stated: “Our working assumption is an attack will happen. It’s only a matter of time. We are preparing for hostile action, we’re preparing the forces, training them, and keeping up their operational readiness.”

(The International Jerusalem Post, August 2-8, 2013, p. 12) It is my opinion that this war will set the stage for the one mentioned in Ezekiel 38-39.

As the world descends into this time of great deception and spiritual darkness, we need to remember the words of the Apostle Paul in 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11. Please take time to read this Scripture. It is time for the church of Jesus Christ to awake out of its apathy and prepare for our departure. “And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.” (Romans 13:11)

A War against Christianity

In a recent article by Michael Snyder, “The Name Of Jesus Has Become A Dirty Word In Politically Correct America,” he warns that a real war on Christianity is unfolding in America. He gives the following examples:

“Evidence of this war on Christianity is everywhere these days. The following are just a few examples…

-An elementary school in North Carolina ordered a little six-year-old girl to remove the word “God” from a poem that she wrote to honor her two grandfathers that had served in the Vietnam War.

-The Ohio Statehouse banned Christian pastors from using the name of Jesus when they open up the daily sessions with prayer.

-The use of the name of Jesus was also forbidden in all prayers opening sessions of the North Carolina State-House.

-Last year, a federal appeals court ruled that prayers before commission meetings in Forsyth County, North Carolina that included the name of Jesus were unconstitutional.

-Earlier this year, a Florida Atlantic University student that refused to stomp on the name of Jesus was banned from class.

-A student at Sonoma State University was ordered to take off a cross that she was wearing because someone “could be offended”.

-A teacher in New Jersey was fired for giving his own Bible to a student that did not own one.

-An open air preacher in Illinois was recently threatened with arrest for “scaring people” with the message of the gospel.

-Volunteer chaplains for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have been banned from using the name of Jesus in their public prayers. Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. Chaplains all over the nation are now being banned from using the name of Jesus.

A recently released 140 page report entitled “The Survey of Religious Hostility in America” included some more examples of how Christianity is being systematically oppressed in America today…

A federal judge threatened ‘incarceration’ to a high school valedictorian unless she removed references to Jesus from her graduation speech.

City officials prohibited senior citizens from praying over their meals, listening to religious messages or singing gospel songs at a senior activities center.

A public school official prevented a student from handing out flyers inviting her classmates to an event at her church.

A public university’s law school banned a Christian organization because it required its officers to adhere to a statement of faith that the university disagreed with.

The U.S. Department of Justice argued before the Supreme Court that the federal government can tell churches and synagogues which pastors and rabbis it can hire and fire.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs banned the men

tion of God from veterans’ funerals, overriding the wishes of the deceased’s families.

A federal judge held that prayers before a state House of Representatives could be to Allah but not to Jesus.” (www.theendoftheamericandream.com, July 25, 2013)

We live in the presence of God. Where ever we go, He is there. As believers, He is with us and in us. Do you acknowledge His presence? Proverbs 3:6

2013 August – The Rebuilding of the Jewish Temple

The Rebuilding of the Jewish Temple

By Micah Winefeld

The world’s most valuable piece of real estate is located on a small hill adjacent to the ancient city of Jerusalem. The battle over who controls it will incite a world war. This much-coveted 35-acre compound is known as the Temple Mount. The Temple Mount is presently under Muslim control, while the Jews yearn to rebuild their temple on this site. These conflicting agendas will eventually trigger a major war in the Middle East that will have global consequences. Islam, which is the world’s fastest-growing religion with 1.5 billion adherents, considers the Temple Mount to be the third most sacred Islamic site. Muslim tradition holds that the Islamic prophet Muhammad made his “night journey” to heaven from this location. Today, this mountain is home to two of Islam’s oldest centers of worship, the Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock. The entire area is controlled by the Palestinian Islamic authorities, the waqf. The waqf has very strict rules concerning non-Muslim visitation and activities on the Temple Mount. Jews and Christians cannot read from the Scriptures or pray on the Mount. There have been many incidents in recent decades that have brought about an Islamic riot due to violations of these rules. In some cases, rioters have been killed. This illustrates that this area is a very serious flash point in the ongoing hatred that Islam expresses toward the Israelis’ occupation of what Muslims called an Islamic trust – territory that belongs to Allah.

In spite of all of this, many Israelis are committed to the hope that someday they will be able to build the third Jewish temple on the Temple Mount. Archeological evidence confirms the Biblical documentation of the previous temples that stood on this mountain. Jews recognize the Temple Mount as “the navel of the earth.” (See Ezekiel 5:5.) It is an ancient tradition that God gathered dust from here to create Adam. They also believe this was the location of Abraham’s attempted sacrifice of Isaac. (See Genesis 22:14.)

Most Jewish scholars believe that the third Jewish temple must be built upon the Temple Mount. In Deuteronomy 12:13-14, the Lord instructed Moses: “Take heed to thyself that thou offer not thy burnt offerings in every place that thou seest: But in the place which the Lord shall choose in one of thy tribes, there thou shalt offer thy burnt offerings, and there thou shalt do all that I command thee.” It is evident from many Scriptures that the Lord chose Mount Moriah, also known as “the mountain of the Lord” or “Mount Zion,” to be the location of His temple. (See Psalm 48.) Therefore, the Jewish people do not have a choice in this matter. If they are to build another temple, it must be constructed upon the Temple Mount.

This is an unusual view of the Temple Mount from the north, looking south at the Dome of the Rock. Notice the “Dome of the Spirits” on the left. Many Bible scholars believe that
this dome marks the location of the Holy of Holies of the previous temples. Therefore, the
Biblical temples did not stand where the present Dome of the Rock is located. The entire
Temple Mount is very vulnerable to great destruction due to an earthquake because it was
created with fill-dirt by King Herod, beginning in 20 B.C.

Both Jews and Muslims are passionate about their religious traditions and aspirations that are bound up on this small plot of ground. As we shall see in this article, the day is coming when a very serious war will erupt over the Jewish occupation of the Holy Land and their aspirations to build their temple upon the Temple Mount. This war will pave the way for the world’s final seven years under the rule of man.

I have been following the developments in Israel concerning the preparations for temple worship and the rebuilding of the Jewish temple for over 40 years. During this time, it is safe to say that all of the talk and preparations have involved the efforts of a few Jewish rabbis and their dedicated followers. However, this seems to be changing. In the last year, two Israeli politicians have called for the rebuilding of the temple. Just a few weeks ago, Housing and Construction Minister, Uri Ariel, stated: “…we need to build a real Temple on the Temple Mount.” They recognize that their statements are provocative. However, they believe the time has come for the rebuilding of the temple.

The rebuilding of the third temple on the Temple Mount is not a prerequisite for the beginning of the Tribulation Period. However, according to four Scriptures, a temple will be constructed and temple worship inaugurated before the mid-point of the seven-year Tribulation Period. While addressing the disciples’ question about the “end of the age,” in His Olivet Discourse, Jesus warned the future generations living in Jerusalem to be aware of the approaching “abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place…” (Matthew 24:15) A little over 600 years before Christ, Daniel had warned that the final years leading up to the beginning of the kingdom, would feature a political leader who will confirm a covenant with Israel for seven years. We know him as the Antichrist. At the middle of this designated time frame, the Antichrist will cause the temple sacrifices to cease and turn on Israel with vengeful wrath. (See Daniel 9:27.) The Apostle Paul, writing to the church at Thessalonica about 20 years after Christ, clarified that the Antichrist will enter the temple and declare himself to be God. Paul wrote:

Let no man deceive you by any means for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition: Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4) Finally, at the end of the first century, about 25 years after the destruction of the temple in 70 A.D., the

Apostle John mentioned the Temple in the final book of the Bible. While describing events that will take place during the mid-point of the Tribulation Period, an angel commanded John to measure the temple. He also wrote that the Temple compound will be controlled by the Gentiles during the last half of the Tribulation. (See Revelation 11:1-2) Therefore, the Scriptural command for the rebuilding of Jewish temple during the Tribulation Period has been given by four writers, spanning a period of 700 years.

A model of the Second Temple of the First Century

There are several preparations that must take place before a temple can be constructed on the Temple Mount and temple worship reinstituted. Let us examine these preparations.

Israeli control of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount

The Scriptures indicate that after the Jewish temple was destroyed in 70 A.D. there would be no temple in Jerusalem throughout the remainder of the Church Age. The prophet Hosea, writing about 100 years before Daniel, wrote about an amazing prophecy concerning the absence of a temple in Israel’s future. He wrote: “For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice … Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the LORD their God, and David their king: and shall fear the LORD and his goodness in the latter days.” (Hosea 3:4-5) These words perfectly describe the political and religious realities of the Jewish people as they were scattered among the nations for over 19 centuries. Jesus proclaimed that Jerusalem would be “trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.” (Luke 21:24)

The first half of the 20th century witnessed amazing events that created the perfect opportunity for the return of the Jewish people to their ancient homeland. Finally, on May 14, 1948, the nation of Israel was reborn. However, Israel would not control all of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount until the defeat of her Arab enemies in June 1967. Only days after this victory, the Israeli government annexed East Jerusalem, uniting all of Jerusalem. However, due to the threat of a major Islamic war over the Temple Mount, the leaders of Israel decided to return control of the Temple Mount to the Muslims. So, Israel is not in complete control of the Temple Mount. Something in the future must change this status, thus allowing Israel to build a temple on the Temple Mount. But, that will once again be interrupted by the Antichrist at the mid-point of the Tribulation. In Revelation 11:2, an angel told John that the Temple compound would be “given unto the Gentiles, and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.” Therefore, the Bible indicates there will be a struggle for the control of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount in the last of the last days. (See Zechariah 12-14.) Zechariah 14:2 indicates half of Jerusalem will be under the control of the Israelis until the end of the Tribulation Period. In light of the developments in Israel over the last few decades, all of this indicates we have arrived at the end of the Church Age. It is apparent that the Lord is about to revive His final plans for His chosen people. At the center of all these activities is the rebuilding of their temple in Jerusalem.

The Attitudes in Israel about a Temple

For 2,000 years now, Orthodox Jews have prayed three times a day for the following 5 things: (1) The return of the land of Israel to the Jews. (2) The return of the Jews to the land of Israel. (3) The rebuilding and reuniting of all Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. (4) The restoration of divine temple worship. (5) The rebuilding of the temple on the Temple Mount. An examination of these requests indicates that the first three have been fulfilled and the preparations for the fourth item are now under way.

Orthodox historian, David Solomon, says about the rebuilding of the temple: “It was the essence of our Jewish being, the unifying force of our people. … No one can say how, and no one wants to do it by force. Sooner or later, in a week or a century, it will be done. And we will be ready for it. … Every day’s delay is a stain on the nation.”

Preparations for Temple Worship

Since my first trip to the Holy Land in 1985, I have been following the exciting preparations for temple worship. My tour groups have made many trips to the Temple Institute in Jerusalem. We will be visiting the new facilities of the Temple Institute on my next tour in March, 2014. Plan now to join us!

Many in the Islamic world stubbornly refuse to recognize the historical Jewish connection to the Holy Land, Jerusalem, and especially the Temple Mount. No excavations have been allowed on the Temple Mount. However, several years ago, Islamic authorities of the Temple Mount brought in heavy earthmoving equipment and removed tons of soil from the Temple Mount to expand their prayer facilities. They dumped the soil in a ravine near the Mount of Olives. Realizing this soil contained clues to Jewish history of the area, a team of Israelis gained permission to move the soil to another location. With the aid of thousands of volunteers, they have been sifting through this soil. This very meticulous effort has already yielded several historical items from the first and second temple periods. Those in charge of this project claim that it will take another 15-20 years to sift through all of the soil. If you are interested in this, I recommend you visit the Temple Institute website at www.templeinstitute.org. Also you can check out the Temple Mount sifting project at www.templemount.wordpress.com.

Another fascinating development in recent years has been the training of young Jewish men for the priesthood. Through DNA analysis, the priestly tribe of Levi has been identified and some are being trained as priests. Jimmy DeYoung, a Christian journalist living in Israel, writes: “A group of religious Jews who live in the Jordan Valley near the ancient city of Jericho are taking practical steps to prepare for the building of the third temple in Jerusalem by preparing descendants of the Kohanim, the priests, and the Levites for service in this next temple. These Jewish leaders have established a training center where temple priests can learn exactly how to conduct the daily temple services and offer the required sacrifices as dictated by the Jewish laws from the Biblical book of Leviticus. The training center will include an exact replica of the temple where the student-priests can learn to do their duties which are required and this training center, the organizers believe, comes at an historic time marking the beginning of the work for the third temple.” (Jimmy DeYoung, Watchman Newsletter, October 12, 2009)

A visit to the Temple Institute quickly reveals that much research has been completed concerning the future temple and its construction. Models of the temple to be constructed are on display, along with many of the vessels and instruments of worship that are necessary for temple worship to begin. When you ask the folks at the institute how long it will take to construct this temple, they smile and simply say: “Not too long, we have been waiting for almost 2,000 years.” Some at the institute have commented that when permission is granted for temple construction to begin, they are prepared to erect a Tabernacle on the Temple Mount, much like the one that served Israel for hundreds of years until the temple was completed by King Solomon. With priests prepared and everything in place, they will begin to offer sacrifices while the temple is under construction. The leaders of the institute remind us that the second temple of the first century was under continual construction while temple worship proceeded in the unfinished temple. Therefore, it is highly likely that Israel will at some point begin to worship in the temple during the Tribulation Period while it is still under construction. We can rest assured that the leaders of this construction and worship will have divine insight and instruction. According to Revelation 11:2-6, two very special Jewish witnesses, probably a resurrected Moses and Elijah, will return to proclaim the gospel and give direction to the construction and Jewish worship at the temple. Jesus declared that Elijah would come before Him and “restore all things.” (Mark 9:12) From a Jewish perspective, this would seem to include the rebuilding of the temple.

When Will Temple Construction Begin?

What stands in the way of the building of the Jewish temple? Physically, the presence of Islamic worship centers on the Temple Mount – the Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, prevent the construction of a Jewish temple. History demonstrates that any movement of stones or dirt around the Temple Mount brings the region to the brink of war. One cannot begin to imagine what would develop should Israel decide to remove one or both of these structures. For centuries, Muslims have expressed hatred and mistrust of the Jewish people. Since the establishment of the State of Israel, and especially the Jewish occupation of Jerusalem, this Islamic hatred is at an all-time high! Therefore, it would appear that Israel is waiting on divine help to clear the way for the building of its temple.

In my opinion, this divine assistance will come during the future Gog-Magog war mentioned in Ezekiel 38-39. In this war, Russia and Iran, along with Turkey, Libya, and Sudan will come against Israel. As they are poised to attack on the northern border of Israel, the Lord will supernaturally defend His people with a massive global earthquake that will destroy the armies amassed on Israel’s border. (Ezekiel 38:18-23) This earthquake in Israel will cause “every wall [to] fall to the ground.” (Ezekiel 38:20) This would include all structures on the Temple Mount. The most radical of the Muslim armies will be defeated and their people humiliated. The Temple Mount will be in ruins. It seems to me that this will create the perfect opportunity for the Antichrist to seize the moment and confirm a covenant with Israel. This treaty will possibly include permission to build their temple on the Temple Mount.

It is very important to note that the stage is rapidly being set for the Ezekiel war. Russia and Iran are close allies and it is apparent they aim to control the future of the Middle East. A surge of radical Islam is currently reshaping the Middle Eastern landscape, creating new foes and alliances. Thanks to the Obama administration, the U.S. is now supporting the Muslim Brotherhood and ignoring alarming developments in Iran. Many who have studied Ezekiel 38-39 have concluded that something must happen to the U.S. – Israeli relationship that will make the world’s only Jewish nation vulnerable to attack, since it will be without the support or defense of its great ally.

In my opinion, current events will bring about a radical change in the Middle East and spark the Ezekiel war. This will lead to the rebuilding of the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. As these events unfold, the Lord could come at any time for His bride – the church of Jesus Christ. Get ready for the shout that will take us out!

The Approaching Economic Tsunami

As the stock mark continues to reach record highs, author Micahel Synder has released a best-selling book on the U.S. economy. In The Beginning of the End, he writes, “Is the global economic downturn going to accelerate as we roll into the second half of this year? There is turmoil in the Middle East, we are seeing things happen in the bond markets that we have not seen happen in more than 30 years, and much of Europe has already plunged into a full-blown economic depression. Sadly, most Americans will never understand what is happening until financial disaster strikes them personally. As long as they can go to work during the day and eat frozen pizza and watch reality television at night, most of them will consider everything to be just fine. Unfortunately, the truth is that everything is not fine. The world is becoming increasingly unstable, we are living in the terminal phase of the greatest debt bubble in the history of the planet and the global financial system is even more vulnerable than it was back in 2008. Unfortunately, most people seem to only have a 48 hour attention span at best these days. They don’t have the patience to watch long-term trends develop. And the coming economic collapse is not going to happen all at once. Rather, it is like watching a very, very slow-motion train wreck happen. The coming economic nightmare is going to unfold over a number of years. Yes, there will be moments of great panic, but mostly it will be a steady decline into economic oblivion. And there are a lot of indications that the second half of this year is not going to be as good as the first half was.” This writer agrees with these observations and comments. We must remember that according to Revelation 6:5-6, the Tribulation Period will begin with a time of global hyperinflation.

When one begins to look at the big picture, it is evident that the world is spiritually, morally, politically, geologically, and economically ready for the most difficult time for the family of nations in the history of mankind. Jesus said: “For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world, to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.” (Matthew 24:21-22)

As believers in Jesus Christ, we are the only ones on the planet that have any hope. Read Romans 8:28-39 and thank the Lord for His everlasting love and the home He has prepared for us in heaven. (John 14:1-3) If you are not saved, now is the time to give your soul to the Lord. Repent of your sins and receive the Lord Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Read Romans 3:23; 6:23; 5:8; and 10:9-13. Now is the time to believe upon and receive the Lord Jesus. (John 1:12; 3:16; Acts 4:12)

Moving Toward the Great Judgment of God

In my opinion, recent events in the U.S. undoubtedly indicate that our nation is perilously close to the spiritual point of no return. Following the pattern in Scripture, this means that our beloved nation is ripe for divine judgment.

The recent decision by the highest court in the land to give same sex marriage the same recognition as the Biblical mandated view of marriage between one man and one woman is a clear warning that divine judgment is about to fall upon America. God performed the first marriage in the Garden of Eden. He created man, then woman. Then, He then declared: “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” (Genesis 2:24) Thousands of years later, while answering His critics’ question about divorce, Jesus repeated the Genesis declaration concerning marriage: “Have you not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they two shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” (Matthew 19:4-6) A few decades later, the Apostle Paul, while writing about marriage repeated this: “For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they shall be one flesh.” (Ephesians 5:31) Therefore, it is obvious that the marriage between one man and one woman is the mandate of Scripture, and was supported by all the writers of the Biblical books, both in Old and New testaments.

Furthermore, these same godly men, under divine inspiration, declared that same sex affections and relations are an abomination to God. The Bible makes it clear that He will carry out divine judgment upon any culture that openly accepts this deviation from His holy mandate. (Read Leviticus 18:19-30.) Some homosexual groups claim that the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah was not due to their homosexual lifestyles. However, this does not agree with the Genesis account and the New Testament writers’ comments about God’s judgment upon these two cities.

In the Old Testament account, the Bible focuses on how the homosexual lifestyles of men in Sodom and Gomorrah brought about their destruction. Notice that according to Genesis 19:4, the men who surrounded the house of Lot demanded that he release the two angels because they thought they were young men. The Bible tells us that these men represented all the men of the city when they cried out to Lot: “Where are the men which came in to thee this night? Bring them out unto us that we may know them.” (Genesis 19:5) The Hebrew word translated “know” plainly indicates they wanted to have sex with these men. Notice that Lot’s response indicates this. He called their request “wicked.” (Genesis 19:7) In his desperation, Lot offered his two virgin daughters to the mob for sexual exploitation. (Genesis 19:8) Also, in the previous chapter of Genesis, the Lord stated to Abraham as he was revealing what was about to happen to Sodom and Gomorrah: “Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous; I will go down now…” (Genesis 18:20)

The New Testament sets forth Sodom and Gomorrah as examples of God’s judgment upon any generation that dares to ignore the Biblical warnings about the acceptance and permeation of homosexuality in a culture. Jude 7 declares: “Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange [different] flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.” While writing about the divine judgment that will come upon the ungodly, the Apostle Peter wrote: “And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes condemned with an overthrow, making them an example unto those that after should live ungodly.” (2 Peter 2:6)

Also, in writing about God’s wrath against ungodliness in Romans 1, the Apostle Paul warns that the open practice and acceptance of homosexuality is a clear indication that a society is morally bankrupt, and has been given up by God and subject to His divine judgment. (Read Romans 1:24-27.) Please notice that in verse 27, God warns the men who commit sex with other men that they will receive in their bodies a due penalty because of their perversion. This is exactly what is taking place in our world today. Please go to www.cdc.gov and examine the statistics given by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They state that it is believed that about 4 percent of the American population practices same sex. However, the statistical data collected demonstrate that about 92 percent of those who contract HIV (aids) have had some connection with the homosexual community!

The homosexual community would read this article and claim that it is hate speech. However, that is not the intent behind God’s laws, standards and mandates. God loves them enough to tell them the truth, and we should too!
